My Passion For Cooking!!

Try Out My New Recipe "Mangalore Cucumber Sambar Recipe/Mangaluru Sauthekayi Huli"!!!

I start this Blog with a Sincere Prayer and Humble Salutations to my Sadguru Sri Shirdi Sai.This Blog is all about sharing my 'Cooking Ventures' I assure all my friends that the recipe's I post here are Simple,Delicious,Tested,okayed and worth giving a shot...Keep Visiting...and Keep Trying Them Out!!!

'Cooking' ,'Story Weaving' and 'Cathartic Writing' are some  of my all time Favourite Hobbies!!!

In My Opinion Hobbies are something which are practised for interest and enjoyment,rather than financial reward..

I always believe that 'Cooking' is an art which can be Achieved or Mastered by mere practice.The perfect blending of the Ingredients, Flavour and Timing results in an 'Idyllic Dish'.

This is one such field where there is always a scope for Improvement,Creativity and Individuality...

Mangalore Cucumber Sambar/Bannada Sauthekayi Huli

Oh Mind, Relax please!!! Stop Setting Yourself On Fire..Put an end to all the waves which Rises in you and Stop Chasing the Aimless Thoughts which Wanders like a Dog around you..

Where does the stress come from? Does it come from our boss, kids, traffic jams, bad relationships? The answer is 'No'....It doesn't come from any of these, it comes only from our thoughts about these circumstances...We are what our Thoughts have made us, they can make us feel Pleased and Pained and can Create Hell and Heaven Inside Us....

What exactly these thoughts are? These are some thing which shapes us, which follows us like a shadow and some times even haunts us like a freaking ghost...Most of the time we try to identify our self with these flickering thoughts,We Erratically take actions based on our Herky-Jerky Thoughts

One realization  which startled me is that we are the creator of these thoughts...we have the remote to choose and play the good thoughts on our mind...Hence the happiness depends on the quality of our it is time to take care of what we think remember words are secondary,Thoughts Travel Far....Lets guard them, nourish them and  produce the most beautiful thoughts......

Keeping the train of good thoughts flowing Today I prepared  My Most Favorite Recipe..Mangalore Cucumber Sambar(Mangaluru sauthekayi huli)

Mangalore Cucumber Sambar( Bannada Sauthekayi Huli)

Its a very Traditional recipe which is quite  popular in south canara,,its a must recipe in all the occasions...Big chunks of cucumber accompanied with aromatic spices and a bit of tamarind makes a perfect combo with  steaming hot white rice or boiled rice .

1)2 Tbsp  toor/channa dal
2)1 Tbsp  urad dal
3)2 tsp white rice
4)2 to 3Tbsp coriander seeds
5)1 Tbsp cumin seeds
6) pinch of hing and asafoetida
7)1/2 cup freshly grated coconut
8)4to 5 dry red chillies
9)3 Tbsp tamarind pulp
10)1 to 2 tsp vegetable oil(preferably coconut oil)
11)salt as per the taste
12)2 Tbsp jaggery
13)1 cup diced cucumber(skin can be retained if desired)
14)Curry leaves

1)Roast all the ingredient except coconut  and tamarind using little oil.
2)Blend all the ingredients using coconut, tamarind extract and little water into a fine paste.
3)Slightly cook the diced cucumber, until it turns into translucent (do not over cook) using little water,add a pinch of turmeric while boiling.
4)Mix the blended masala and cucumber and bring to a boil
5)Add salt, jaggery,hing and curry leaves and boil for 2 to 5 minutes
6)Tadka can be given if desired

Mangalore Cucumber Sambar/Mangaluru sauthekayi huli  is ready ,relish it with steaming hot rice.

One Beautiful sunny morning I was beaming with pride when I realized I have mastered the art of riding two wheeler, the joy knew no bounds...Every horn I heard seemed magical and musical to my ears.. All passer-by on the  road looked Familiar and Friendlier....The turns and twists I took looked smoother and Nicer....There wasn't a better day than this, when once this heavy bulldozer now feels like a lighter and flakier cute vehicle. All the meticulous traffic rules, hand signals and gestures now seems like a 'Cake walk'....

Now I can say I know the meaning of ' Why should Boys have all the Fun'.. I sincerely thanked and sent salutations to those who helped me in this venture. Gliding and Riding went on for some time Until I heard a familiar sound in the back ground and a well know voice said 'Can you dismiss your alarm"? 'Its been buzzing since long time'.. I raised the accelerator but in vain and realized it was a  'Dream'....

I applaud myself for at least  trying and conquering fears to some extent... I Beseech Lord  Vinayaka to ward off any obstacle and hence bless me in this new venture ..... 'Hope is life' hence I never lose hope on me and continue to chase my Dream... I treated myself with good food for this Nobel thought.....Hence my today's post is dedicated to the people like me who Refuse to Give Up.....

Ganesh Chaturthi Special Modaka:
These are sweet dumplings prepared exclusively on Ganesha Festival.. Lord Ganesha is extremely fond of sweets hence he is also called as 'Modaka Priya'.... This Traditional recipe calls for Maida and sweet filling....Since we are in this Health Conscious Era I decided to Offer Lord the Healthy Version Of Modaka, that is the whole wheat Modaka...

Ingredients to make outer layer of Modaka
1)2cups whole wheat flour
2)2Tbsp semolina
3)salt as per the taste
4)water to make a dough
5)1 Tbsp ghee

Ingredients to Make sweet filling
1)1 cup freshly grated coconut
2)1 cup jaggery
3)1tsp cardamom powder
4)1 Tbsp Ghee
5)2 Tbsp roasted poppy seeds

Method to make dough(outer layer)
1)Mix wheat flour, salt, ghee, semolina into tight dough using little water
2)The consistency of the dough should be of poori dough
3)rest the dough for some time

Method to make sweet filling:
1)Add 1 spoon ghee in a pan, roast coconut for about 2 minutes
2)Add jaggery and keep mixing until you get a halwa consistency
3)Add remaining ghee, cardamom powder and roasted poppy seeds

Method to make Modaka
1)Take oil in kadai for deep frying
2)Make small balls(half the lemon size)
3)Roll out these balls (like poori) and place the sweet mixture in the middle. Bring all the sides together to give a Modaka shape..
4)Deep fry these Modakas until it turns into golden brown in colour.
5)cut the flame to off and store in an air tight box

Crispy Modaka is ready to serve...It can be stored for 2 to 3 days after that the outer layer seems to get harder..

Butter fruit Sandwich/ Gaucamole spread/Avocado spread

Kids are god's most Deviceful Creation...Without them Tomorrow wouldn't be worth waiting and Yesterday wouldn't be worth remembering .They are the Corner Stone of our Futuristic Future.. These Kids without being aware they practise 'Zen' meaning they live and dwell completely in the present, they know the value of Now and take complete liberty to enjoy each and every moment of life...

Life Indeed Seems Beautiful and Beaming with these tiny tots who are full of Joy .Their Innocence is a Mirror to see god, their honesty is a way to reach god and their ever smiling face is a path to one's heart...We as adults and so called Self-Regulators need to Perceive life through their eyes ,embrace life with a child-like attitude and  should learn to accept the 'Present' with Grace...

To keep these smart kids going we need to provide them enough nutrients and vitamins. My today's post is dedicated to the kids out there who are the hope for our better nation....

Butter Fruit:

1)Avocados like olives are high in mono- unsaturated fatty acids and calories. This helps in lowering LDL or bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol and also reduces coronary heart diseases as well as stroke.
2)Butter fruit is rich in iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium.
3)Contains high amount of dietary fibres and vitamins such as A,K and E.

Avocado spread/Guacamole spread

1)1 fully ripe avocado
2)1tsp freshly grated garlic
3)1tsp extra virgin olive oil
4)salt as per the taste
5)1tsp red chilly flakes
6)oregano and Basil 1tsp each
7)3Tsps finely chopped onion, tomato and capsicum
8) 1/2 lemon
9) 2Tpsn  black olives(optional)
10)Brown Bread slices 4 to 5
11)1tsp coriander leaves

1)Scoop out the pulp(discard the seed),add all the above ingredient and give it a nice mix
2)Add salt and herbs and mix well
3)finally add dash of lime and keep aside. Avocado spread is ready.
4)Heat the tava ,place brown bread by adding little butter or olive oil.
5)switch off the flame when bread is nicely toasted on both sides.
6)Make a sandwich by spreading the avocado mixture in the middle and enjoy with a cup of piping hot masala chai as snack as well as breakfast....

Enjoy this delicious sandwich for breakfast or as an evening snack... This will also serve as delicious Dip for corn tositos...

Healthy Concoction!! Betel Leaf Khashaya

An Evening Stroll in a park in the Bangalore city is like Walking under the Gigantic Fan where air is Gushing and Whirling from all possible directions....The after affect of this is like Pleading all New Viruses and Bacteria's to enjoy an Holiday in our system.....These Intruders not only make you jaded but can also make you Dance on the Hospital Floor....Once they were our Esteemed Guest and made the whole family Dance for there Tune...

We visited all Tom, Dick and Harry and drank bottles and bottles of Tonics which made no effect on the  viruses and bacteria's rather made them more sturdy and comfortable.....This is when my mother told me to dig my own backyard for the medicinal weed  and made one magical concoction out of betal- leaf , betal-nut and edible lime.The combination of these things worked wonders and brought down our constant coughing which once sounded like cats and dogs are fighting to an delectable halt.....

Health Benefits Of Betel Leaf:

Betel leaf has been recognized as one of the medicinal plants that has tremendous health benefits.Some are listed below.
1)Cures swollen gums/mouth.The concoction made using little salt should be used to gargle...
2)Eliminates body odour and bad breath..Should be taken as a concoction using little sugar.
3)Cures cough and Bronchitis... Should be taken as a concoction made using few pieces of betel nut and edible lime..

Betel leaf kashaya/concoction

1)2 betel leaf finely washed
2)2 to 3 betel nut
3)Pinch of edible lime
4)1 cup water

1)Bring all the ingredients to boil until it leaves a red colour concoction.strain and consume when it is hot.
consume this for 2 to 3 times  a day for about 2 to 3 days until the cough subsides...

Banana Guiwa(banana Gooey halwa)

Today is an auspicious day for all the Hindus,it is the lakshmi pooja...

We believe that on this day the goddess of wealth visits all her devotees and bestows gifts and blessings upon each one of us...To welcome the goddess we clean our house and decorate the house with finery and lights and prepare sweet treats and delicacies to offer it to the mother of wealth.The devotees believe that the happier she is with the visit the more she blesses the family with the health and wealth.....

In spite of me being an ardent theist some questions about life are left unanswered...If a simple prayer invokes god then why there is a huge disparity between the rich and the poor? where is god when the innocents are being brutally hurt? Why a parent loves only his/her offspring unconditionally?Why this Partiality? Aren't every human being a creation of god? Why every relationships comes with a tag line"conditions apply"?........These questions were my worst nightmare until one day I found the answer which Quenches all Spiritual,Ethical,Practical and mainly Scientific Minds....

The Simple Truth 'The Law Of Karma' Says it all....It means we reap what we sow,We cannot expect Apples when we have sown the seed of Cactus...Science proved long back that "Every action has equal and opposite Reaction"....This Revelation is a New Hope to the Hopelessness and an Ascend  to the Descended  Life and a chance to Right all the Wrong's.... Let along with the rituals also take care of our Karmic Accounts.....

With this belief in my mind I am offering a sweet treat to the goddess Lakshmi...

Banana Guiwa!!

My today's post is Banana Guiwa (Banana Gooey Halwa)
Halwa is an Indian Dessert which is quite popular because of the simplicity and the delicious taste....Halwa can be made from any flours,nuts,vegetables and fruits... This Traditional recipe calls for very few ingredients which are readily available in our pantry.Some over ripe bananas,sugar,nuts and ghee...The banana halwa is very tasty and gooey...Hence the name Banana Guiwa(Name courtesy goes to my Husband)

1)4 over ripe bananas
2)1 cup sugar
4)2 Tbsp Ghee
5)2 to 3 Cardamom pods

1)Take a  heavy bottom pan,add sugar and a few ladles of water..Bring to boil.
2)When the sugar gets dissolved add mashed (blended) banana
3)Add cardamom pods(or powder) and keep stirring until we reach the halwa consistency...
4)Add nuts and a table spoon of ghee and keep stirring.
5)Turn the flame to off when the halwa is done.Pour the mixture to the greased pan.
6)Cut into desired pieces once it is completely dried..

Delicious Banana Guiwa is ready to relish....

Veg Fried Rice

The First Few Days of the New Year are Usually Full Of Resolution Making and Probably  By This Time Most of us would have Tossed the New Year Resolutions Up in the Air , some of us are Juggling to cope and one or two may be Striking a Chord..Thomas Edison Said 'Vision Without Execution is Hallucination".....Why Every Year we fail to Execute our Resolutions.....What Exactly this Resolution means.. The Dictionary Meaning says "A firm Decision To do Something,or  Not to Do Something"....Setting Goals In Life is Very Important.....Life without a Goal is Like a Ship Without a Compass... Resolutions Must be Attainable, Measurable and Realistic....Goals Fail If They Lack Motivation and the Positive Frame Of Mind........

My Take On New Year Resolution is not to wait Until The First Day Of The New Year to Start Something Good....The Ultimate Goal is to Be Happy and do things rather than doing things and Expecting Happiness to Embrace us....."Happiness Is not a station You Arrive,but  a Manner of Travelling"....

So On that Happy Note I start My First Post Of This whole  New Year....My Today's Recipe is Veg Fried Rice....If I am Given a Chance to Choose Between Pulav and Fried Rice, I would definitely Opt the Later because of its versatility and Simplicity....This Recipe calls for very simple Ingredients even a hand full of vegetables can  Fabricate The Whole Magic....One Obligatory Requirement for this Recipe is that the rice grains should be partially cooked and can be enjoyed with any veggies tossed with some spice's and sauce's...

1)1 cup cooked rice(preferably basmati rice)
2)1 cup vegetables(capsicum of any colour,cabbage,spring onion,onion)
3)1 Tbsp garlic and ginger chopped
4)2 Tbsp Soya ,white Vinegar,tomato and chilly sauces
5)1 Tbsp Vegetable or any cooking oil
6)Salt to taste
7)pinch of sugar

1)Take Oil in a Kadai or big Wok, Sautee ginger and garlic..
2)Then Sautee mixed vegetable(carrots, capsicum and onion, cabbage and onion)
3)Add salt as per the taste
4)Add Tomato ketchup, soya,white vinegar and Green chilly sauce(Each one table spoon)
5)Add a pinch of sugar and cooked rice.....Sautee on high flame for a minute or so...
6)Finally add spring onion and serve hot with any sauce of your choice.......

1)To make a perfect basmati rice,soak the rice for at least 20 minutes in a Luke warm water after thoroughly washing the rice...The idea here is to remove all the starch.(starch makes the rice sticky)
2)Add 2 cups of water for 1 cup rice wait until the water gets to boil,meanwhile add 1 tsp oil and 1 tsp salt...(on high flame)
3)After the water starts boiling close the lid and get 1 whistle.Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes on low flame....... Basmati rice is ready....

Soya Chunks and Poha Cutlet

Silence is Golden,try telling this to an Orator a Public Speaker who loves to Deliver Speech and gabbles a lot will give one Hard stare at you.Similarly try to Explain a Diet Plan to an Epicure who loves to Experiment Different Cuisines and always at the Quest to Satisfy his Palate will throw a Nasty look.. Many of us are dubious about the different professions but These Veterans love their job In spite of all the odds likewise an House wife who loves her Job though her role is considered as one the least praiseworthy Jobs..... This post is a tribute all the Housewives out there who work Round-The-Clock in order to please their family... 

My Today's pick is very Unique, Delicious and Healthy to the core... 

The star Ingredient of my recipe is Soya Chunks..The Word Soya itself is capable of making many heads turn because of its exceptional nutritional quality..It is also called as 'Vegetarian Meat'...It is prepared from Defatted Soya Flour by extrusion cooking. At the time of preparation it undergoes structural changes and forms a fiber like network..It is widely used in many curries and in Manchurians because it absorbs all the flavors as the soya chunks has got no taste of its own....Rich source of Protien and Fiber....

Soya Chunks and Poha Cutlet

1)1 cup soya chunks 
2)1 cup thin poha(Paper poha)
3)2 Tbsp vegetable oil or any cooking oil 
4)2 small boiled potatoes 
5)1tsp kasoori methi (dried methi leaves)
6)1 Tbsp green chillies cut into small pieces 
7)1 tsp sugar 
8)1/2 cup onion cut into small pieces 
9)1 Tbsp cornflour 
10)1 tsp Cumin seeds 
11)1 Tbsp ginger garlic paste 
12) coriander leaves for garnishing
13)1 tsp garam masala
14) 1 tsp coriander and cumin powder 

1)Take a wok and add 1 Tbsp of oil,add cumin seeds,ginger garlic paste and green chillies when the oil gets warm.
 2)fry till the raw smell of ginger garlic vanishes,add onion and fry the color of the onion changes.
 3)Keep water boiling in a small container and add the soya chunks,keep it for 2 to 3 minutes the soya chunks absorbs the water...Squeeze the excess water and keep aside.
 4)Add boiled and mashed potatoes,soya chunks and all the dry ingredients including poha and sautee for 5 minutes.Finally add coriander leaves and a spoonful of cornflour powder and make patties of desired shape..
5)Shallow fry these patties until both the sides turns to golden yellow color and serve hot with and of the favorite sauces..

Gooseberry Jam

Many Nights ago the Magnificent dark,night sky Compelled me to Gaze at the White Radiant Moon which was Blazing with the Divine Aura.. Moon the Ultimate Resplendent Beauty which became the spotlight for personifying the most charming piece of work.... This made me Admire and Worship the Creator for his Artistry....
In order to the Gratify the Nature I believe each one of us  should take a moment in viewing this spectacular phenomenon which is  just a glance away..
But lately we are kind of  taking a Detour from the nature and its products.The aftermath of this is showing its ill-effects on our health...

It is interesting to know that Nature provides us with all the necessary requirements to keep our body fit and healthy in the form of 'Fruits and Vegetables',which are power packed with all the essential nutrients...

Amla Jam(Nellikayi Jam)

My today's post is  dedicated to my Father-in-law..Both my In-laws are Great Cooks. My father-in-law holds the Honor of being the  'Master Chef'.... Reason being Simple and Straight,he has an Ability to 'visualize'  the flavor combinations and can also Anticipate the Outcome of the dish..If  I let my father-in-law in the kitchen then I am sure he will come out with a New Recipe with the Flavors Perfectly Infused...Amla Jam is one of his Best Recipes.... Thanks Mava for the Wonderful Recipe.....

Before posting this recipe I did a lot research on the Health benefits of Amla...One very Important and Interesting thing I found was that the Vitamin 'C ' present in the amla is of Heat Stable Form hence it doesn't get lost during the processing....This is one of the main reasons it is an essential ingredient in the preparation of the very popular Ayurvedic  Medicine  Chyavanaprasha......

1)1 cup freshly grated Amla along with the skin (Indian Gooseberry)
2)3/4th cup sugar(Jaggery)
3)Pinch of cardamom and salt

1)Pressure cook the grated Amla using little water(for about 2 whistles)
2)Make a Sugar Syrup,the consistency of the syrup should be of one thread.
3)Saute the cooked Amla for about a minute or two(to remove the water content)
4)Add the sauteed Amla(already grated and cooked) to the sugar syrup and mix continuously until you get a Jam like Consistency.
5)Add freshly powdered cardamom and a pinch of salt(salt helps in balancing the flavors and also as a preservative)
6)Cut the flame to off,store it in an air tight container(Preferably refrigerate for the longevity)

Amla Jam is ready,enjoy with the varieties of foods like Dosa,Roti,Rotti,Chapathi or Phulka....

Amla or Nellikayi is a potent gift of Mother Nature to a Mankind.Enough has been said and written about it..The benefits are so much that it is advisable to include this small wonder in the daily diet.
1)High in vitamin C,helpful in many skin diseases,it promotes glow on skin and also delays wrinkles and loosining of skin.
2)Good food absorption,helps in getting a better eye sight,regulates blood sugar,increases hemoglobin and so on.......

Kulfi or Qulfi

Each One of us crawl through the week to keep alive the spirit of Joy and Happiness which the weekends Bring...These Weekend Jubilation's are something which Facilitates us through our Frantic week...No Celebration is ever Complete without some Delicious Food,if it is accompanied with mouthwatering dessert then its a 'cherry on the cake'....

Pista Kesar and Badam Kulfi

Kulfi is a well known Indian frozen dairy dessert,it is similar to Ice cream in  appearance and taste but  is denser and creamier.....It comes in Enormous flavors but Pistachio and Badam are the most traditional and yearned Flavors..

My maiden attempt to make these Heavenly delicious Recipe was a big hit because of is a fellow blogger who has created an wonderful space with many Lip-smacking recipes....

Though the traditional recipes demands for Heavy Cream and Condensed milk this recipe Happens to be my Favorite because of its Lightness...

My Husband who was little Hesitant in tasting this kulfi initially ,after he took his first  bite,in a blink of an eye the whole kulfi made its way to his stomach:))


1)2 1/2 cup milk
2)3 to 4 Tsp sugar(tune according to your taste)
3)3 to 4 cardamom pods
4)10 to 12 pistachio and Badam(keep few of them aside for grinding)
5)few strands of Kesar
6)2 slices of white Bread(separate the sides)
7)1/2 tsp corn starch
8)Kulfi moulds 


1)Boil 2 cups of milk in a heavy bottom pan on a medium heat
2)Blend 1/2 cup mik,corn starch,cardamom,bread slices and an handful of Badam and Pista into a coarse paste
3)Add sugar,blended paste,few peices of badam and Pista to the boiling milk and stir continuously
4)It starts to get thicker and thicker beacuse of the corn starch...Switch of the flame and allow it cool..
5)Pour this into a kulfi mold  or any desired shape molds and refrigerate for at least 6 to 8 hours... 

Pista Kesar and Badam Kulfi is ready to serve.
